Welcome! The Private Investigator’s Association of Virginia (PIAVA) is a 501c (6) non-profit organization consisting of members who are registered as a "private investigator" with Virginia's Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Private Investigators credentialed in states other than Virginia, as well as individuals working in areas related to the private security industry, may also join PIAVA.
Our members routinely share information, resources, training and business opportunities. In addition, our members strive to increase consumer awareness regarding the value of hiring properly licensed/registered, trained and experienced private investigators. PIAVA is actively involved in monitoring and influencing legislation and regulations that affect private investigators in Virginia. Every member of PIAVA pledges to conduct their activities in accordance with the association’s professional Code of Ethics.
In Virginia, a "private investigator means any individual who engages in the business of, or accepts employment to make, investigations to obtain information on crimes or civil wrongs; the location, disposition, or recovery of stolen property; the cause of accidents, fires, damages, or injuries to persons or to property; or evidence to be used before any court, board, officer, or investigative committee."
It is important to note that, in Virginia, only a "Licensed" PI Business can contract with a client to conduct an investigation.
A Registered PI is not permitted to have clients independent of a Licensed PI Business. Any contract for an investigation must include the PI Business's License Number. A Licensed PI Business in VA will have a license number starting with "11-xxxx". A Registered PI will have a DCJS-issued identification card with a registration number starting with "99-xxxxx".
