In the Commonwealth of Virginia, a private investigator is anyone who gathers information on crimes, civil wrongs, stolen property, accidents, fires, damages or injuries to property or persons or evidence to be used in before any court, board, officer or investigative committee. Code of Virginia § 9.1-138.1.

OUR MISSION
The Private Investigators Association of Virginia (PIAVA) is a professional association whose members are licensed private security services businesses and registered private investigators. PIAVA represents the modern investigative industry in Virginia.

PIAVA members proudly pledge to conduct their business affairs in accordance with a professional Code of Ethics.

PIAVA helps increase consumer awareness about professionally conducted investigations so the public can make informed decisions about utilizing members' services.

PIAVA works to improve the industry through positive legislative activities and active involvement with the Department of Criminal Justice, Private Security Services Section.

PIAVA is an active network of professionals whose members share opportunities and information resources.

PIAVA only provides industry-related information to nonprofit groups, attorneys, government agencies and other investigators as a community service.

The association does not provide career consultations for laypersons, nor does it recommend non-member private investigation companies or training school services.
